Pharmakidou flat
In-depth renovation (design-study) of interior space

An old flat in the city center that was never before renovated or looked after for various reasons. The building to which it belongs bears a good architectural vocabulary with interesting details both inside and outside of it. The things that create the first impressions are the linear volumes that run in all levels of the building and create this “tidy” image and provoke a sense of arrangement. Having observed that the approach that was adopted in the interior was somewhat respective to that of the exterior facade.
The interior space was divide into multiple rooms that each served a specific function (i.e kitchen, entrance hall etc.) but in a small space acted more as obstacles than as vital elements of it. A decision to examine a better living scenario for a space that opted for more usability, friendly-ness and practicality was taken. This scenario included the demolition of three walls and a bathroom ceiling elements which would liberate the entire space from restrictions and would allow for a better communication among the vital living areas.
After having removed the walls then a new floor plan was prepared, one that looked upon everyday needs while adopting a clean design that would create a serene environment. The area in the entrance hall was arranged with furniture pieces that are suitable for every day use and practicality. These included a long shelve with a magazine stand on one side of the hall and a coat rack, shoes storage and general storage furniture on the other side. A mirror at the end of this furniture which has generous dimensions almost identical to the furniture ensured that natural and artificial light was distributed in the interior.
The space that comprises the entrance hall was enlarged after the demolition of a wall and became part of the unified space which is connected to the living room and the kitchen. This continuity is maintained by the grey tile that is applied on all of these spaces and creates a tranquil surface. The views from every space are framed by the exposed concrete beam and columns which add to the material palette in an interesting way. The kitchen was arranged into two lanes with counters that add to the usability of the space and follow the geometry of the longer sides of the flat. Pale yellow and brown hues were chosen for the wooden surfaces, combinations that make the cupboards more light and create a slight contrast with the floor.
A marble fillet placed vertically on the narrow side of the diving wall between the kitchen and the entrance hall sets the limits of each space. A similar marble fillet which is placed above the bathroom door and acts as a lintel also sets the tone of materials with discreet gestures. Inside the bathroom black ribboned tiles create a peaceful atmosphere which is complimented by the light blue ceiling.
