Wine bar

This project was a proposal for a small wine bar located in the heart of Athens. The client’s goal was to create a pleasant environment that would be instantly distinct and memorable at the same time. The guide lines that were communicated through the briefing were that in general a light industrial feel would be given to the space with touches of some refined materials (oak wood, marble etc).
Given that the space was small some specific factors that had to do with the feeling inside of it were addressed. In specific the maximum internal height had to be taken advantage of without any suspended plaster ceiling being employed, which meant that all the electrical infrastructure and ventilation machinery would remain unconcealed. As a result these details would enhance the industrial feel and would communicate the entire aesthetic approach of the space immediately. The space that was previously filled with plasted on every available surface apart from the floor had to become more light and open. A painstacking removal was conducted revealing columns and beams that were only covered with concrete and some others with white marble. At that point the whole idea of a dynamic small space that makes use of simple, elegant and rough materials at the same time become more clear than ever.
As far as the outside aspects of the space were concerned, the cleaning of the facades reavealed more surfaces of marble that were installed there in the early 60s. In order to blend the materials nicely a contrary element to marble had to be chosen. The idea to use galvanized steel was clear because of its characteristics (industrial) . Following the same same idea ,this material was also used in the interior in order to emphasize certain details that would stand out. The characteristics of this material helped to create a distinctive feel and airiness on the large facades of the space by the conctruction of sliding and steady metal doors and windows. In order to design these elements the ‘communication’ between the interior and the exterior were seriously taken into consideration. The main when a structure like that is realised is that offers easy access to the interior and it does not block the view to the outsides areas. Following the principal which applies on a small space and that is make it look bigger that it actually is, some of its qualities had to be boldened. The floor was emphasized by a simple and serene epoxy resin color and created the feeling of a unified space. The continuity of the floor here enlarged the space and highlighted its contents.
A bar station made of oak and metal was designed to act as the main meeting point of the bar. Due to its large dimensions in order to make it more appealing and soft a curve end was created. This created an interesting play between the intense angles of the floor plan and the construction. The counter top surface was made of aluminium to further intensify the industrial aesthetics and reflect the light generously into the space. Behind the bar station the available space had to host a multi-purpose unit that would have specific uses such as that of a wine refrigerator,a sink,a dish washing machine and a storage space for wine bottles. To organize this space effectively a metal frame was designed using iron, inox steel and wood. The rest of the cuctom made furniture that were made ,were of laminate wood, plywood and galvanized steel.
To further deal with the limited space in an effective way the toilette was put in the far right corner of the plan. In that way a route was marked inside the space tand connected all the areas(kitchen, dining). An L shaped booth was created as the ideal ergonomic solution, thus in accordance with all the hygiene standards . An extra private booth had to incorporated in this space in order to offer to the employees some privacy while changing clothes etc. Inside this space an anthracite color and burgundy wall tiles were chosen for the walls and the floor respectively. Bearing in mind that this space was confined the option of a transparent ceiling was adopted so as to allow natural and artificial light to enter and mix the boundaries between the interior and exterior of the room.
Upon elaboting on the general idea of the optimum usability of the interior, the principle that the available space for seated and standing people should be generous arose. That in turn was a key point for the design of the dining tables. The first one was an eight person and the second one , a circular one wide enough to seat four people. The position of the tables made the floor planning even more clear and easy to handle following the long side of the space and developing in that side in a parallel way. Seen from the top the floor plan is articulated into three zones that are distinctive and blend in smoothly with each other without disrupting the circulation to all directions.
To further highlight the linearity of the space and follow the rectangular form of the space some custom made lamps where produced from very affordable materials. Some galvanized sheets, aluminium pipes and linear lamps that are widely used and are available in the market were combined to create some really special and effective lamps.
Overall a complete transformation of a space that was formerly stuffed with unneccessary materials and had lost its dynamic and all of its qualities took place. A well articulated interior with maximum usability became the new identity of this space.
