Room remodelling with modular furniture

A single bedroom in a small apartment with limited space was turned into a multi-functional space with the aid of metal structures. The objective was to handle the space in such a way that a working unit-area could be integrated in the room without ruining the flow inside of it. Overall by lifting the bed from the floor a sitting area was created underneath, enough to host a three seat sofa. In order to maximize the usage of the space all the area was worked out vertically. A modular unit which comprises a bookcase, a storage space and a fixed working desk were then added. These elements complement the furniture additions that were done inside the space and set an architectural rhythm. The galvanized steel accompanied by the grey walls highlight the industrial – working environment and at the same time create a peaceful interior.

The banker bed was used as a concept here since it liberates space from underneath and reorders every function around it. The structure is developed by using galvanized steel which bears a characteristic color and texture. The visual result is something that stands out in the space and at the same time is combined in a neat way with the other additions that are painted in a pastel greenish-grey color. The construction is characterized by an industrial aesthetic which is emphasized by the different metal intersections and joineries. In order to access the bed level a sculptural ladder was created in the same logic .Another complementary but necessary feature which are two side rails were added on both sides of the bed along with a head board that has an incorporated table-like pass. The entire construction defines the space vertically as it is spanning from the floor to the ceiling with two columns and in accordance with the beams that connect them render the design language of the structure easily read.
The other construction that was added in the space is multi-purpose furniture piece that comprises a bookcase, a storage space and a fixed working desk. The orientation of this structure was built around the evolving and ever-changing needs of the space which in turn are defined by the needs of the each time inhabitant. This is achieved by the different available positions the shelving unit has which means they can adjusted and re-arranged at any time. The fixed desk can also be removed and be replaced by a different construction be it a smaller desk or a tv unit-case which is something the client had originally asked for.
The last issue that needed to be dealt with was the that of lighting since the space especially close to the bed is very dark even in full daylight because of the orientation of the building. Following the aesthetic of the rest additions which were constructed with different types of metal some simple and liner light fixtures were created . Industrial perforated cable trays were used in order to create distinctive suspended volumes from the ceiling hosting characteristic linear T8 lamps.
The final result is that of a space that has been fully reworked and designed in a way that all the necessary functions that are required are fulfilled with a characteristic aesthetic touch. The Ergonomics of the space, friendly to use perspective and low cost – sustainable approach were the prime principals that were implemented in order to create a playful environment.
